Module 9 - Activity 2: Reflect

A teacher put a problem before students of class IV.

Add  400+7

A student has done it in the following way

 400+7 = 4007

Another student has done in following manner

400+7 = 1100

  • What prerequisite knowledge might students not have?

  • What kind of questions can be asked to students to address their misconception?

Take a moment to Reflect and post your comment in the comment box.

  5. Here, the prerequisite knowledge which students might not have is the knowlege of place value of the digits.
We should teach the students to know the place value of each digit in a number. For example, in 407 the place value of 7 represents ones, or in 470 the place value of 7 represents tens and in 4007 the place value of 4 represent thousands or 4000.
    400+7=407

This problem arise because the students dont have the knowledge of place value of the digit like ones place, tens place ,hundred place...etc
So to solve this problem ..we can ask or put some questions related to place value of digit in order to find out their area of weakness or encourage them to address their misconceptions so that the same will be rectify and correct .

AS the concept is taught in the earlier classes, he/she is aware of the idea but when it comes to the application, he/she makes mistake. To over come this, reading the number from the extreme right should be made to practice. The same pattern of question can be asked. Only the student must possess the knowledge that when it is a single number, it will always be in the ones place. And the number in the ones place should be added to the number in the ones place the other number.

  112. The prerequisite knowledge that students in this case lack is the understanding of place value. Some questions that a teacher may ask to clarify their misconceptions can be -
    * If you have 400 marbles and your brother gives you 7 marbles, how many marbles do you have all together?
    * Can you recall the place value chart? Shall we do it together?
Based on the responses, the teacher can take up from there and proceed to solve the problem

We can ask questions related to place value of digit, so that they can understand and correct their mistakes

    ReplyDelete
    400+7=407

  132. The prequisite knowledge which the students lack is the place value of each digit in a number. For example in 407,the place value of 7 is one, 0 is tens and 4 is hundred. As in the above problem, that is 400+7, the students can't figure out where to put the number 7 to be added to 400 as they lacked the knowledge of place value. It is important that students understand that while a digit can be the same, it's value depends on where it is in the number.

    ReplyDelete
  133. The perquisites knowledge of students which lacking behind the knowledge of place value of digits, here the teachers would teach the students the easy method like 400+1=401.400+2=402.400+3=403----------400+7=407.

  137. The student does not know the concept of addition and unit place value. To clear their misconception we can perform the following activity:
Say we have 15 apples and we divide them into 10+5.
It is logical, even for a child, that there are 15 apples altogether, simply by counting. In this way,the concept of unit place value, addition and subtraction can be easily explained.

    ReplyDelete
  138. 400+7= 4007 or 400+7=1100.
This shows that the students does not have any knowledge about the Place Value of different digits or no proper order of adding the digits.
Hence as teachers we should ask the students inorder to motivate them by asking what is the place value of the zeroes, 4 and even 7. How can two numbers be added by arranging in proper order. Therefore by knowing the place value of the first 0 and 7 as units place, they can arrange to add the numbers in the correct form like,
    400
    +. 7
    ________
    407

    ReplyDelete
  139. In this case the students didn't have the knowledge of the place value of digits.Hence they cannot add up correctly 400 and 7 .This problem can be solved by teaching them the place value of digits and then ask them to identify each place value of digits.

  142. The prerequisite knowledge that the students did not understand is how to add the numbers column wise. And also addition should always start from the first number from the right.
The Questions below are asked in order to address their misconceptions:
    1. Do we need to arrange the numbers in column wise before we add the numbers?
    2. When we add the numbers we start from the left or from the right side?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Student usually use to make a mistake in this type of question if they lack the concept of the place value of a number, so to adress this type of problem a child must be teach about the place value of a number, so question should be ask in stage wise eg 4 + 7,40 + 7'400 + 7

This shows that the students does not have any knowledge about the Place Value of different digits in a given number like counting of their places as ones place, tens place, hundred place etc.
Therefore, before adding the two numbers 400 and 7, we may ask, what is the place Value of 1st zero, place Value of 2nd zero, place Value of 4 and even the place Value of 7.
As place Value of 1st zero is one's and place Value of 7 is also ones. Hence, if a student add this number it would be able to place the digits correctly like, 400
    + 7
    ________
    =407

  156. In this case, the students does not have the prerequisites knowledge of the placement of value of the digits.
We can ask the students how they got that sum. We can even ask students where are they having problem and confuse while they are adding such numbers. In this way we can make them understand their misconception. We can even show them the correct way of adding.
    For example:

  158. The students here are having problem with the place value. They're putting the place value of a digit in the wrong place.
Many young children have difficulty with place value because it is abstract. We can ask them how they got that answer. We should give them proper chance to speak up about their problems and listen to them carefully about the problem they are having in adding numbers. We can also ask them to change any one digit from certain numbers and ask them if the number increase or decrease. Also using manipulative, such as base-ten blocks, can help students connect the abstract with more concrete representations.
