Module 15 - Activity 6 : Developing activities in progression for early numeracy
Design and share at least one activity in progression for preschool-1 (3 to 4 years old children) and preschool-2 (4 to 5 years old children) for literacy or numeracy development.
Take a moment to reflect and post your comment in the comment box.

ReplyDeleteAs early childhood education moves front and center in the public policy debate, more attention is being paid to early literacy. Early childhood professionals have long recognized the importance of language and literacy in preparing children to succeed in school. Early literacy plays a key role in enabling the kind of early learning experiences that research shows are linked with academic achievement, reduced grade retention, higher graduation rates and enhanced productivity in adult life. This report synthesizes the body of professional knowledge about early literacy and offers research-based recommendations

ReplyDeleteLiteracy is more than just learning to read,It also includes how children interpret and understand what is being read, as well as writing skills and composition.
Connect-the-dots with letters:
Good old connect-the-dots gets revamped when we write a handful of repeating letters in random patterns down a length of paper. Kids can connect the letters in any way they like, so long as all of the G’s (for example) are connected to the other G’s, and so on......
Children learnt in many different ways through experience making and doing things through their experimentation like reading discussing listing debating on topic and thinking capacity both personally or in groups

ReplyDeleteThrough everyday activities at home you can also help them
ReplyDeletedevelop their numeracy skills, such as calculating and using
numbers, recognising patterns, and using language to develop
mathematical understanding.
These literacy and numeracy activities are excellent opportunities
for you to model key learning values such as enthusiasm,
persistence and curiosity.
These tips and activities can also be used by a child’s older
siblings and grandparents, or other relevant people in a child’s
life, to help develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
The booklet is divided into activities for two age groups:

ReplyDeletePre-school is that stage where students are most likely to play and run and shout make friends, try to recapitulate their friends name, trying to recount how many friends they have in school, and how many are joys and girls are there. This is the time when studies doesn't matter for them at all..but in order to start this session I think the better way is to do it by playing and learning where the child would firstly encounter himself in the classroom and feels confident and comfortable with the other students.. I think play way method is very important to make a child comfortable in his own pace and feels at home and feel safe in the learning environment he is.. They will also learn by started talking with each other and trying to converse in their own languages, in this way they will also acquired and learn different languages in their school. So in the Pre-school stage children normally donot read and teachers doe not force them to read but try to teach them different things in a different ways in a different atmosphere where children seems comfortable with.
ReplyDeleteAt pre school -1(3-4)yrs for their numeracy development we should always talk about numbers ,shapes around them.while giving them anything count and give so that what they will learn reapeated words easily.
ReplyDeleteAt preschool -2(4-5)yrs child easily can count upto 10.Activities like counting their toys, dolls, cars, choclates ,friends should be continuously given for their numeracy development.

Counting:
Counting is one of the first experiences of maths for young children.Learning to say numbers often begins with a favourite song or rhyme and the repetition of the number names. Children will often say the numbers before they visually recognise and identify
individual numbers.
Here are some activities and tips to engage children with
counting:

ReplyDeleteTo develop numeracy and literacy in children of pre school, several activities can be designed by the teacher.
ReplyDeletePre school I: The teacher can design a game to develop numeracy in them. If the teacher will call out any numbers from 1 to 10, the children will try to form groups according to the number called out by the teacher. In this way children will learn numbers through play way method.
Pre school II: The teacher can design an activity where children are asked to count the pictures according to the numbers indicated opposite the pictures and then colour them. This activity will help children to learn the numbers as well as to identify the pictures.
Ask students to identify numbers by counting their own numbers of fingers they have.
ReplyDeleteFor small children below 5 years its very difficult for them to leant how to read and write, so activities is the best method for learning. To unable the children to know the no 1-10 , the teacher need to draw two parellel lines and cut like one rectangle , inside that rectangle have to write the numbers 1- 10 in each rectangle, and each child have to go one rectangle after another till they completed . While going the teacher along with children have to say together one till ten, and all students get chance to do this activity. After all knew by oral so a teacher need to teach them how to write these numbers 1- 10. Teacher could teach them throught dots like 1so that children's hands could know where to start and where to end and their hands could follow these dots and slowly they will come to know how to read and write.

2) For pre School age of 4 to 5 years, I can show a chart showing A for 🍎, B for ball, C for 🐈 and so on.., this will create concepts of alphabet s and their initial sounds with vocabulary.
For both the preschool 1 and 2 they are under the age in which as a teacher have to work hard in order th build in all areas of development congnitive ,physically ,mentally ,communication ,skills as well as social skills ,in order to develop their numeracy skills play way method is relevant with this age group like songs rhymes of number visual redinh with flashcards etc ...

Pre-counting:
The key focus in pre-counting is an understanding of the concepts more, less and the same and an appreciation of how these are related. Children at this stage develop these concepts by comparison and no counting is involved.
One-to-one counting:
The key focus of one-to-one counting is developing children’s ability to count. Two skills are needed:
Ability to say the standard list of counting words in order
Ability to match each spoken number with one and only one object.
Preschool-2(For children 4 to 5 years):
Counting sets:
The key focus of counting sets is developing children’s understanding of cardinality. This means that children understand when you count the items in a set, the last number counted tells the size of that set. They also know that the number in a set will remain constant as long as no items are added to the set, or taken from the set.
Counting from one to solve number problems:
The key focus here is counting objects to solve addition and subtraction problems.
Children will need to use materials such as buttons, plastic animals, or whatever they may be playing with, to keep track of their counting. For example, children will combine 3 and 2 by first counting out “1,2,3” for the first set, then “1,2” for the second set, then physically join the sets and counting them all “1,2,3,4,5.”
Counting on to solve number problems
Once children understand cardinality and the forward and backward number sequences they can count on or back to solve number problems. For example 5 and 3 can be added by counting on from the largest number: “5…...6,7,8”.
Ask a student to identify alphabets like capital letters and small letters
